Madonna and Child
Barbara Longhi painted 15 different works, 12 of which were paintings of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. I chose this particular Madonna and Child out of the 12. The painting depicts Mary reading out of a book, most likely the Bible, with Jesus reading along. It also appears Mary may be tickling Jesus. This displays the loving mother in Mary. It sends a message of warmth that we can all relate to, the relationship between someone and their mother.
Barbara Longhi
Born in 1552 in Ravenna, Italy, Barbara Longhi was the daughter of painter Luca Longhi. Not much information is known about Longhi, but she painted 15 different works. Twelve of these works were paintings of Madonna and Child. These were a series of paintings that all displayed the Virgin Mary and Jesus as an infant. They are Longhi's best known works.

Why I Chose this Artwork
While I was looking through different pieces of artwork done by females during the Renaissance, I came across Barbara Longhi and her Madonna and Child paintings. I thought it was interesting that she painted so may different ones, and I chose this Madonna and Child out of all of the rest because of its bright colors.

I thought Woman by the Sea had vibrant colors similar to this particular Madonna and Child by Barbara Longhi. Also, the woman in Woman by the Sea is in a very similar looking position to the Virgin Mary in Madonna and Child, and they both have very similar looking facial expressions.
